Sunday Morning Special + Bestowed Box Winner


Whew! Can you believe it’s already Sunday again? I had a full, fun week that included a visit to the farmers market and taking home the world’s largest zucchini, a couple medical appointments (hopefully I’ll be good to go in another couple weeks!) and a few fun outings to explore some uncharted (to me) Des Moines territory. Today I’m planning to whip up some muffins with all of that summer squash and take a stroll around my neighborhood to enjoy the nice sunny weather we’ve been lucky enough to have all week!

Before I hit the kitchen and the road, here are some stories, recipes and more that caught my eye lately:

  • Lindsay’s List hosted an honest discussion about skinny vs. happy, a topic that will hit home for many of us (and hit the nail on the head, I think). “Spending even a SECOND fretting over how big my butt is—that’s a total waste of my time.” Preach, Lindsay!
  • Nope, you don’t need to eat oodles of steak or drink a glass full of raw eggs to meet your protein needs. :) Here, Christine from Oatmeal in My Bowl shares a list of vegetables that offer a surprising amount of muscle-boosting protein per serving. Seriously, is there anything kale can’t do?!
  • Do you prefer hot or regular yoga? Or maybe neither? A friend contacted me to talk with a Reuters reporter about my experience with hot yoga and the story was posted on the TODAY Show website this week. I’m still not sold that the heat makes my practice more effective, but the feeling of working hard and getting a good sweat in is hard to beat!
  • One of my mom’s all-time favorite foods: cinnamon rolls. These pastries aren’t traditionally the most waistline-friendly, though. Thankfully, Taralynn of Undressed Skeleton has a lighter, low-sugar swap that looks absolutely scrumptious! The next time we have a family holiday brunch, these rolls will have to be on the menu.
  • If you think an at-home, equipment-free workout can’t be challenging, I dare you to try this “99 Workout” I discovered on Pinterest. It’s probably better if you wait until you finish to calculate how many total reps the routine includes! :)
