Sunday Morning Special: Skinny Summer Recipes and Home Workouts for HOT Days


Can I have a pause button, please? Tomorrow marks the start of July. That also means that my Million Dollar Marathon leg is coming up in just three short weeks! Un. Real. Speaking of MDM, if you want some fascinating, inspiring reading, follow the progress of the team here.

As you can see above, I’ve been soaking up some summer fun these past seven days. A couple highlights: one VERY sweaty and very scenic run in my new Mizuno Wave Sayonaras (review coming soon!) and a fresh yet filling dinner eaten on a downtown Des Moines patio with a pal.

This week, I’m off to New York City and am so excited to catch up with my girl Sam! But before I go, here are a few of my favorite discoveries from around the web this week:

  • Speaking of NYC, many residents there can’t avoid a killer commute. Luckily, everyone can easily alter two of the three ways that long drive, train or bus ride might be affecting your health, PopSugar Fitness says.
  • Even if you have a long sit on your way to work, you can work those muscles at home beforehand. Jess of Blonde Ponytail designed a “Countdown Workout” that looks fast and super-effective, while Beth of Naked Fit shared an equipment-free “30/50 Workout.” These are also awesome options when the mercury rises too high for outdoor exercise!
  • See that salad pictured above? I must recreate it at home (well, minus the olives :) ). The base wouldn’t be tough—just mix romaine, cucumber, onion and tomato. But the key is a big scoop of a flavorful hummus. Enter Engine 2′s healthy homemade version. I think I’ll try to jazz it up with a bit of extra garlic and chopped cilantro to be true to the restaurant’s recipe!
  • I can’t decide which of the 12 Skinny Summer recipes featured on Fit Foodie Finds I want to try first. Maybe it’s Lee’s Grilled Corn? No, her Dessert Shooters. Wait…I mean the Vanilla Protein Ice Cream. Maybe I should just whip up one of each!
  • Ariana Huffington’s “Unplug to Recharge” discussion is slightly old news, but is relevant nonetheless—especially for everyone who is constantly posting status updates, sharing tweets and blogging. Check it out, then join me by logging off and enjoying our last day of June!

    • How awesome about the Quick Bix, Kelly! You are going to be great out there. If I do the Bix it’s going to be a last-minute thing–I’m playing it by ear since 6 days before I’ll be running my Million Dollar Marathon leg. I’d love to still participate if my legs are up for it, though!
